Shop Natural Skincare →"Clean beauty" is one of the most marketing-saturated terms in the industry — and one of the most scientifically inconsistent. Products labeled "clean" can contain ingredients with legitimate safety concerns, while products labeled "conventional" can be formulated with impeccable safety profiles. This protocol applies the same evidence-first framework to ingredient safety that we apply to ingredient efficacy: what does the peer-reviewed literature actually say?
The Evidence Framework for Ingredient Safety
Not all "concerning" ingredients are equally concerning. The dose makes the poison — a principle established by Paracelsus in the 16th century and confirmed by every toxicology study since. The relevant questions are:
- What is the actual exposure level in a typical skincare product?
- What does the peer-reviewed evidence show at that exposure level?
- What is the regulatory status in major markets (EU, US, Canada)?
Ingredients with Legitimate Evidence-Based Concerns
Oxybenzone (Chemical Sunscreen)
Oxybenzone is absorbed through the skin at measurable levels. Matta et al. (2019), JAMA, PMID 30933258, confirmed systemic absorption above FDA thresholds. Endocrine disruption potential in animal studies. The EU restricts oxybenzone concentration. Evidence-based alternative: zinc oxide or titanium dioxide mineral sunscreens. Synthetic Fragrance
"Fragrance" on an ingredient label can represent hundreds of undisclosed chemicals. Fragrance is the leading cause of contact dermatitis in skincare. The American Contact Dermatitis Society has named fragrance mix as an allergen of the year multiple times. Evidence-based alternative: fragrance-free formulations or products using essential oils with disclosed ingredients.
Parabens (High-Dose Concern)
Parabens are preservatives with weak estrogenic activity. Darbre et al. (2004), Journal of Applied Toxicology, PMID 14745841, detected parabens in breast tissue. However, the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety has concluded that individual parabens (methylparaben, ethylparaben) are safe at current use levels. The concern is cumulative exposure across multiple products. Evidence-based position: low individual risk; reasonable to minimize cumulative exposure.
Ingredients Commonly Avoided Without Strong Evidence
Honest limitations of the clean beauty narrative:
- Mineral oil / petrolatum: Extensively studied; no evidence of harm at cosmetic use levels. Highly effective occlusives. The "pore-clogging" claim is not supported by dermatological evidence.
- Silicones: Inert, non-absorbed, non-toxic. Environmental persistence is a legitimate concern; skin safety is not.
- Sulfates (SLS/SLES): Irritating to some skin types but not toxic. The concern is barrier disruption, not systemic toxicity.

Reading Ingredient Lists: A Practical Guide
- Ingredients are listed in descending order of concentration — the first 5 ingredients make up the majority of the formula
- "Fragrance" or "parfum" = undisclosed chemical mixture; avoid if sensitive
- "Natural" is not a regulated term — it means nothing legally
- "Organic" is regulated (USDA, COSMOS) — look for certification logos, not just the word
- EWG Skin Deep database is a useful starting point but uses hazard (not risk) assessment — high hazard scores don't always mean high risk at cosmetic use levels
