Sensitive Skin Protocol: The Evidence-First Routine That Actually Calms Reactive Skin

Sensitive skin doesn't need more products — it needs fewer, better-chosen ones. This protocol is built around what the science says actually reduces reactivity, not what marketing says.

What "Sensitive Skin" Actually Means

Sensitive skin is not a skin type — it's a symptom of barrier dysfunction. When the stratum corneum (the outermost skin layer) is compromised, irritants, allergens, and microorganisms penetrate more easily, triggering immune responses that manifest as redness, stinging, itching, and reactivity.

The goal of a sensitive skin protocol is not to find products that don't irritate — it's to repair the barrier so that the skin stops being reactive in the first place. Elias & Feingold (2001), Journal of Investigative Dermatology, PMID 11511299 — established that barrier repair is the primary therapeutic target in sensitive and reactive skin conditions.

The Core Principle: Every product in this protocol is chosen for what it does NOT contain as much as what it does. Fragrance, alcohol, synthetic preservatives, and high-concentration actives are the primary triggers for sensitive skin reactions.

The Sensitive Skin Protocol

🌅 Morning Routine

  1. Cleanse gently — use our Milk & Honey Fragrance-Free Tallow & Goat Milk Soap Bar. The near-neutral pH preserves your acid mantle; the goat milk lactic acid gently removes overnight buildup without stripping.
  2. Hydrate — apply our Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Moisturizer to damp skin. Squalane and ceramides reinforce the barrier while hyaluronic acid draws moisture in.
  3. Protect — finish with our Daily Repair Moisturizer with Mineral SPF 50+. Mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) are significantly less irritating than chemical UV filters for sensitive skin.

🌙 Evening Routine

  1. Cleanse — same fragrance-free goat milk bar, or our Double Cleansing Kit: Soothing if you wore SPF or makeup.
  2. Barrier seal — apply our Whipped Tallow Balm with Blue Tansy as your moisturizer and final step. Blue tansy (azulene) provides anti-inflammatory support; tallow's fatty acids integrate into the barrier and support overnight repair.
🟢 Evidence Tier — Barrier Repair: TIER 1. Ceramide and fatty acid supplementation for barrier repair is confirmed across multiple RCTs. Schmid-Wendtner & Korting (2006), Skin Pharmacology and Physiology, PMID 16679819 — confirmed pH-compatible cleansers preserve barrier function vs. alkaline alternatives.

What to Eliminate First

Before adding anything, remove these common triggers from your routine:

  • Fragrance (listed as "fragrance," "parfum," or individual fragrance chemicals) — the #1 cause of contact dermatitis
  • Alcohol denat / SD alcohol — disrupts barrier and increases TEWL
  • High-concentration AHAs/BHAs — reduce to low concentrations or eliminate during flare periods
  • Essential oils — common sensitizers despite "natural" status
  • Retinoids at high concentration — introduce only after barrier is repaired

When to Reintroduce Actives

Once your skin has been stable (no redness, stinging, or reactivity) for 4–6 weeks on the basic protocol, you can begin reintroducing actives one at a time, 2 weeks apart:

  1. Low-concentration niacinamide (2–5%) — anti-inflammatory and barrier-supporting
  2. Bakuchiol — retinol-like gene expression without retinoid irritation
  3. Low-concentration lactic acid (5%) — gentle exfoliation once barrier is stable
