Mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) sit on the skin surface and physically scatter and reflect UV radiation. They work immediately upon application, are photostable, and are not absorbed into the bloodstream in meaningful amounts.
Chemical filters (avobenzone, oxybenzone, octinoxate, tinosorb) absorb UV radiation and convert it to heat. They require 15–20 minutes to bind to skin before providing full protection, some are photounstable (degrade in UV light), and several have been detected in blood, urine, and breast milk after topical application.

Sensitive and Reactive Skin
Chemical filters — particularly oxybenzone and octinoxate — are among the most common causes of photoallergic contact dermatitis. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide have excellent safety profiles and are rarely sensitizing. For anyone with reactive skin, mineral is the default choice.
Acne-Prone Skin
Many chemical sunscreen formulations use emollients and film-forming agents that are comedogenic. Zinc oxide has inherent anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties — it's the same ingredient used in diaper rash cream and acne spot treatments. A mineral sunscreen can actually help acne-prone skin rather than aggravate it.
Pregnant and Breastfeeding
Given confirmed systemic absorption of chemical filters and their detection in breast milk, mineral sunscreens are the recommended choice during pregnancy and breastfeeding by most dermatologists.
Children
The FDA recommends mineral sunscreens for children under 6 months, and most pediatric dermatologists prefer mineral for all children due to the systemic absorption concern.

How Much Sunscreen You Actually Need
