The science is more robust than most trending skincare ingredients — but the consumer market is full of underpowered devices and overclaimed results. This protocol separates what's confirmed from what's marketing.
The Science: How Red Light Therapy Works
Red and near-infrared light is absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase, a mitochondrial enzyme, triggering a cascade of cellular effects: increased ATP production, reduced oxidative stress, modulation of inflammatory cytokines, and upregulation of growth factors including TGF-β1 (which stimulates collagen synthesis). Evidence by Application
🟢 TIER 1 — Multiple RCTs Confirm
Collagen Stimulation & Anti-Aging
Barolet et al. (2009), Journal of Investigative Dermatology, PMID 18754003, demonstrated that 660nm red light significantly increased procollagen type I and MMP-1 modulation in human skin fibroblasts. Wunsch & Matuschka (2014), Photomedicine and Laser Surgery, PMID 24286286, confirmed significant improvement in skin complexion, skin feeling, and collagen density in a randomized controlled trial.
Hair Growth (Androgenetic Alopecia)
Laser and LED devices at 650–670nm have the strongest evidence base for hair growth. Lanzafame et al. (2013), Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, PMID 23401314, demonstrated a 35% increase in hair count in women with androgenetic alopecia using a 655nm device. Kim et al. (2013), American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, PMID 23970445, confirmed similar results in men.
🟡 TIER 2 — Promising Early Evidence
Wound Healing & Post-Procedure Recovery
Multiple studies support RLT for accelerating wound healing and reducing post-procedure inflammation. Particularly relevant after microneedling, laser resurfacing, or chemical peels.
Acne
Blue light (415nm) has stronger evidence for acne than red light — it targets C. acnes directly. Red light reduces inflammation. Combined blue + red light devices show the most consistent results for inflammatory acne.
Rosacea & Inflammation
Early evidence supports RLT for reducing rosacea-associated erythema and inflammation via cytokine modulation. Not a replacement for trigger management but a useful adjunct.
What Red Light Therapy Does NOT Do
Honest limitations: RLT does not remove pigmentation, resurface texture, or treat active acne infections (that's blue light's role). Underpowered consumer devices — those below 10 mW/cm² irradiance — are unlikely to deliver therapeutic doses. Results require consistent use over 8–12 weeks minimum; single sessions have no lasting effect. RLT is an adjunct to a skincare routine, not a replacement for actives, SPF, or barrier care.
The Critical Variables: Wavelength, Irradiance & Dose
- Wavelength: 630–660nm (red) for skin surface; 810–850nm (near-infrared) for deeper tissue penetration. Most quality consumer devices include both.
- Irradiance: Minimum 10 mW/cm² at the skin surface for therapeutic effect. Check device specs — many consumer devices underdeliver.
- Dose (fluence): 3–60 J/cm² per session depending on application. Skin rejuvenation: 3–10 J/cm². Hair growth: 4–6 J/cm².
- Frequency: 3–5 sessions per week for the first 8–12 weeks; maintenance 1–2x per week thereafter.
- Distance: Follow device manufacturer guidelines — irradiance drops sharply with distance.
The Red Light Therapy Protocol
🔴 Skin Rejuvenation Protocol
- Cleanse — remove all SPF, makeup, and skincare before treatment. Photosensitizing ingredients (retinoids, AHAs) should be applied after, not before, RLT.

- RLT device to scalp — 655–670nm, 3–5x per week, 15–25 minutes per session
