Peptide patches, eye patches, forehead patches, and wearable LED devices represent a new delivery format for skincare actives. The appeal is intuitive: keep the active in contact with the skin for hours rather than minutes, and you should get better penetration and results. The reality is more nuanced — delivery format matters enormously, and not all patches are created equal.

The Science of Transdermal Delivery

The stratum corneum is a formidable barrier — by design. Most molecules larger than 500 Daltons cannot penetrate it passively. This is why most topical actives work on the skin surface or in the upper epidermis, not in the dermis. Peptides are typically 500–3,000 Daltons — at the upper limit of passive penetration.

Patches improve on serums in one key way: occlusion. By covering the skin, patches create a hydrated microenvironment that swells the stratum corneum, temporarily increasing permeability. This is the same principle as slugging — but applied locally and with the active ingredient built into the patch matrix.

Evidence Review by Format

🟢 TIER 1 — Hydrocolloid Patches (Acne)

Hydrocolloid spot patches have the strongest evidence base in the wearable actives category. They absorb wound fluid, protect from picking, and create an occlusive environment that accelerates healing. Draelos (2006), Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, PMID 17173576, confirmed hydrocolloid dressings accelerate superficial wound healing. The mechanism is well-established; the application to acne is a logical extension.

🟡 TIER 2 — Peptide & Active Patches

Peptide patches with occlusive backing have preliminary evidence for improved delivery over standard serums. The occlusion-enhanced penetration mechanism is well-established; peptide-specific patch RCTs are limited. Cosmetic peptide patches (forehead, eye area, décolleté) show consistent consumer-reported results for fine line reduction, though controlled trials are sparse.

Key variables: patch material (hydrogel vs. hydrocolloid vs. silicone), peptide molecular weight, contact time, and skin preparation before application.

🟡 TIER 2 — Eye Patches (Hydrogel)

Hydrogel eye patches deliver humectants (hyaluronic acid, glycerin) and peptides to the periorbital area with enhanced contact time. What Wearable Actives Do NOT Do

Honest limitations: patches cannot deliver actives to the dermis without assisted delivery (microneedles, electroporation). Standard hydrogel or hydrocolloid patches work in the epidermis only. Wearing a patch longer than recommended does not improve results — most patches reach equilibrium within 2–4 hours. Patches are not a replacement for a complete skincare routine — they are targeted adjuncts for specific concerns.

  1. Cleanse thoroughly — patches adhere best and deliver most effectively to clean, product-free skin
  2. Apply serum if using — apply your active serum first; the patch occludes and enhances penetration of the underlying serum
  3. Apply patch to target area — press firmly for 10–15 seconds to ensure adhesion
  4. Leave for 2–6 hours or overnight — follow product instructions; longer is not always better
