When this ecosystem is in balance, the scalp is healthy. When it's disrupted — by over-washing, harsh shampoos, antibiotic use, diet, or stress — the result is dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, scalp inflammation, and accelerated hair loss.
The Scalp Microbiome: Key Players

- Cutibacterium acnes (bacteria): Also present on the scalp; contributes to follicular inflammation when overgrown

Dandruff vs. Seborrheic Dermatitis vs. Dry Scalp
- Dandruff: White or yellow flakes; oily scalp; caused by Malassezia overgrowth. Responds to antifungal ingredients.
- Seborrheic dermatitis: More severe form; red, inflamed patches with greasy scales; requires antifungal treatment and may need prescription intervention.

🟢 TIER 1 — Antifungal Ingredients for Dandruff:
- Zinc pyrithione: The most studied OTC antifungal for dandruff. Reduces Malassezia population and scalp inflammation. Pierard-Franchimont et al. (2002), European Journal of Dermatology, PMID 12370133.
- Ketoconazole (1–2%): Prescription-strength antifungal; most effective for seborrheic dermatitis. OTC 1% available in some markets.
- Selenium sulfide: Reduces Malassezia and sebum production; effective for moderate dandruff.

- Wash frequency: Every 2–3 days for most scalp types. Daily washing strips sebum and disrupts the microbiome; less than twice weekly allows Malassezia overgrowth.
- Water temperature: Lukewarm — hot water increases sebum production and scalp inflammation
