The Claim: Bakuchiol Works Just Like Retinol — Without the Side Effects
It’s one of the most repeated claims in clean beauty: bakuchiol is natural retinol. It reduces wrinkles, improves skin texture, boosts collagen, and fades dark spots — just like retinol — but without the peeling, purging, sun sensitivity, and irritation that make retinol so difficult for many people to use.
Is this true? Or is it clean beauty marketing dressed up in scientific language?
Verdict: Partially Confirmed — with important nuance.
Bakuchiol is genuinely effective. But calling it “natural retinol” is both accurate in some ways and misleading in others. Here’s the full picture.
What Is Bakuchiol?
Bakuchiol (pronounced buh-KOO-chee-ol) is a meroterpene phenol extracted from the seeds and leaves of Psoralea corylifolia, a plant used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. The retinol comparison emerged from a landmark 2018 study published in the British Journal of Dermatology, which compared 0.5% bakuchiol applied twice daily to 0.5% retinol applied once daily over 12 weeks.
What the Science Actually Shows
The 2018 BJD Study
The study found that both bakuchiol and retinol produced statistically significant improvements in fine lines and wrinkles, skin elasticity and firmness, overall photodamage, and pigmentation. Critically, the improvements were comparable between the two groups — but the retinol group experienced significantly more facial scaling and stinging.
How Bakuchiol Works (It’s Not the Same Mechanism)
Bakuchiol does not work through the same mechanism as retinol. Retinol works by binding to retinoic acid receptors (RARs) in the skin. Bakuchiol does not bind to these receptors. Instead, bakuchiol upregulates the same genes that retinol targets (type I, III, and IV collagen) through a different signaling pathway, inhibits matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) that break down collagen, and exerts significant antioxidant activity. The functional outcome is similar — but the mechanism is different. This is why bakuchiol delivers retinol-like results without retinol-like irritation.
Where Bakuchiol Wins
Tolerability
Bakuchiol has no retinization period. It can be used morning and evening from day one, on sensitive skin, during pregnancy (retinol is contraindicated in pregnancy), and in combination with other actives that retinol can’t be paired with.
Photostability
Retinol degrades rapidly when exposed to UV and must be used at night. Bakuchiol is photostable — it can be used in morning routines without degradation or increased photosensitivity.
Compatibility
Retinol has a long list of ingredients it shouldn’t be combined with: AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C, benzoyl peroxide. Bakuchiol has no such restrictions and can be layered freely with other actives.
Where Retinol Still Wins
Strength of Evidence
Retinol has decades of clinical research behind it — it is the most studied topical anti-aging ingredient in existence. Bakuchiol’s evidence base is growing but still limited.
Potency
Prescription-strength tretinoin produces results that no current bakuchiol study has matched. For severe photodamage, deep wrinkles, or acne scarring, the retinoid family remains the gold standard.
The Verdict: Who Should Use Which?
| Skin Type / Concern | Recommended |
|---|---|
| Sensitive, reactive, or rosacea-prone skin | Bakuchiol |
| Pregnant or breastfeeding | Bakuchiol |
| Retinol beginners | Bakuchiol (start here) |
| Morning anti-aging routine | Bakuchiol |
| Severe photodamage or deep wrinkles | Retinol / Tretinoin |
| Experienced retinol users with tolerant skin | Either, or both |
Can You Use Bakuchiol and Retinol Together?
Yes — because bakuchiol works through a different mechanism than retinol, the two are complementary rather than redundant. Apply bakuchiol in the morning and retinol at night for a comprehensive approach that covers both the photostable and photosensitive windows.
