What Is Bakuchiol?

Bakuchiol is a meroterpene phenol derived from the seeds and leaves of Psoralea corylifolia (babchi plant), used for centuries in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine. In modern skincare, it gained attention after researchers observed that it produced retinol-like gene expression changes in skin cells — without binding to retinoid receptors.

This is the key distinction: bakuchiol mimics some of retinol's downstream effects (collagen stimulation, cell turnover support, antioxidant activity) through different upstream mechanisms. It is not a retinoid and does not carry retinoid-associated risks (teratogenicity, photosensitivity, irritation).

The Clinical Evidence: What the Research Actually Shows

The Landmark Study: Dhaliwal et al. (2019)

The most important bakuchiol study is Dhaliwal et al. (2019), published in the British Journal of Dermatology: "Prospective, randomized, double-blind assessment of topical bakuchiol and retinol for facial photoageing." This was a 12-week, double-blind RCT comparing 0.5% bakuchiol (twice daily) to 0.5% retinol (once daily) in 44 participants.
