Vitamin C Serum Guide: How to Choose, Layer, and Actually See Results
Vitamin C Serum Guide: How to Choose, Layer, and Actually See Results
Vitamin C is the most evidence-backed brightening ingredient in skincare — and one of the most misused. The form, concentration, pH, and storage all determine whether yours works or oxidizes in the bottle.

L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) inhibits tyrosinase — the enzyme that catalyzes melanin synthesis — reducing hyperpigmentation at the source. It also neutralizes free radicals generated by UV exposure, preventing oxidative damage to collagen and DNA. And it's a required co-factor for collagen synthesis: without adequate vitamin C, the hydroxylation of proline and lysine (essential steps in collagen formation) cannot occur.
The Form Problem: Not All Vitamin C Is Equal
| Form | Efficacy | Stability | Irritation |
|---|---|---|---|
| L-Ascorbic Acid | 🟢 Highest | 🔴 Low | 🟡 Moderate |
| Ascorbyl Glucoside | 🟡 Moderate | 🟢 High | 🟢 Low |
| Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate | 🟡 Moderate | 🟢 High | 🟢 Low |
| Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate | 🟡 Moderate | 🟢 High | 🟢 Low |
| 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid | 🟡 Good | 🟢 High | 🟢 Low |
The honest take: L-ascorbic acid has the strongest evidence but oxidizes quickly (turns orange/brown — discard it when it does). Stable derivatives are better for sensitive skin and longer shelf life, with slightly lower but still meaningful efficacy.
Concentration Guide
- 5–10% — beginners and sensitive skin; effective with less irritation risk
- 10–15% — the sweet spot for most people; confirmed efficacy range
- 20%+ — diminishing returns above 20%; more irritation without proportionally more benefit
The Vitamin C Protocol
🌅 Morning (Vitamin C is an AM ingredient)
- Cleanse — gentle cleanser, pat to damp
- Vitamin C serum — Brightening Vitamin C Face Serum on damp skin. Wait 60–90 seconds before layering — vitamin C needs to absorb before you apply anything over it.
- For targeted dark spots — add Goodal Green Tangerine Vitamin C Dark Spot Serum as a second layer or spot treatment. Green tangerine provides a stable vitamin C derivative with additional brightening botanicals.
- Moisturize — Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Moisturizer
- SPF — mandatory — Daily Repair Moisturizer with Mineral SPF 50+. Vitamin C + SPF is the most evidence-backed photoprotection stack available without a prescription.
🌙 Evening
Vitamin C is not needed at night — use your retinol, bakuchiol, or peptide protocol instead. See the Retinol & Bakuchiol Night Routine and Brightening & Dark Spot Protocol for PM brightening strategies.
Storage: The Reason Your Vitamin C Isn't Working
L-ascorbic acid oxidizes rapidly when exposed to light, air, and heat. Store your vitamin C serum in a cool, dark place (not the bathroom). A refrigerator extends shelf life significantly. Discard when the serum turns orange or brown — oxidized vitamin C provides no benefit and may cause irritation.
