Magnesium Cream Absorption: Does It Raise Magnesium Levels?
VERACIL • EVIDENCE-FIRST BODYCARE
A magnesium cream is not automatically a magnesium supplement
The key question is not whether magnesium matters. It is whether the actual topical formula delivers a meaningful, demonstrated systemic dose.

Medical disclaimer: This is educational information, not a diagnosis or treatment plan for magnesium deficiency, cramps, or sleep disorders. Do not replace prescribed treatment or a clinician-recommended supplement with a topical cosmetic based on this page. Persistent symptoms need individualized assessment.
This page evaluates an online wellness claim. Current viral popularity has not been independently verified. Its focus is systemic absorption, not a general sleep routine.
The small human study behind the discussion
🟡 Tier 2: preliminary human evidence with substantial limitations
Kass et al. (2017), PLOS ONE, randomly assigned 25 participants to a magnesium cream providing 56 mg magnesium daily or a placebo cream for two weeks in a single-blind pilot study. They measured serum magnesium and 24-hour urinary excretion. Read the pilot study, PMID 28403154.
The magnesium group's serum increase was not statistically significant in the overall analysis reported in the abstract (p = 0.29). Statistical significance was reported only for serum magnesium in a subgroup of non-athletes. The urinary change was not statistically significant. Those distinctions matter more than repeating a percentage increase without its uncertainty.
A small, short pilot with a subgroup signal is not confirmation that every magnesium cream corrects deficiency. It also did not test either Veracil product linked below or establish superiority to oral supplementation.
What the broader review concluded
Tier 2 evidence remains insufficient for a dependable supplementation claim. Gröber et al. (2017), Nutrients, reviewed the available transdermal-magnesium literature and concluded that promotion of transdermal magnesium was scientifically unsupported by the evidence they evaluated. Read the review, PMID 28788060.
That conclusion should not be inflated into proof that no magnesium can ever cross skin. The practical point is narrower: the reviewed evidence did not establish reliable clinical supplementation through marketed topical approaches. This page does not claim to be an exhaustive review of every study published since 2017.
What the catalog establishes, and what it does not
A tallow-based balm
Dead Sea Magnesium & Tallow Balm is listed as a 2.5 oz topical balm with grass-fed tallow and magnesium chloride. Its description claims three-times-better bioavailability and sleep and recovery benefits. No supporting finished-product comparison was verified here.
Neither Kass et al. (2017), PLOS ONE, PMID 28403154, nor Gröber et al. (2017), Nutrients, PMID 28788060, establishes that this balm has three times the bioavailability of oral magnesium. This guide does not endorse that numerical claim.
A scented cream format
Recover Magnesium Skin Cream lists water, aloe, several oils, magnesium, Dead Sea salt, waxes, and peppermint, clove, and eucalyptus essential oils. Its catalog claims deep muscle absorption and symptom benefits. We did not verify a clinical trial of this finished formula demonstrating those outcomes. The listed essential oils also mean it is not an unscented option.
The absorption-claim decision protocol
This is a purchasing and evidence checklist, not a magnesium-replacement regimen.
- Separate bodycare from supplementation. Decide whether you want a topical texture or need medical evaluation of a possible deficiency. A cosmetic purchase is not a substitute for the latter.
- Ask for evidence matching the bottle. Request a finished-product human study with dose, comparator, duration, and relevant outcomes. Ingredient names alone do not establish systemic delivery.
- Read the whole result. In the Kass pilot, the overall serum result and subgroup result differ. Do not treat a favorable subgroup as a confirmed effect for everyone. Kass et al. (2017), PLOS ONE, PMID 28403154.
- If considering topical bodycare, compare the formats. The tallow balm and essential-oil cream are alternatives, not a required combination. Check current full packaging information and follow its directions.
- Do not invent an absorbed dose. Product weight, application amount, or an ingredient listing cannot tell you how much magnesium reaches your bloodstream.
- Do not escalate to chase a systemic effect. More applications or larger skin coverage are not established here as a way to correct deficiency. Stop if a product causes irritation.

Questions before buying
Does tingling establish absorption?
This page provides no evidence validating skin sensation as a measure of systemic magnesium delivery. Do not use tingling to estimate a dose or treat irritation as a benefit.
Did the pilot prove deficiency correction?
No. Its short duration, small sample, and nonsignificant overall serum result do not establish dependable deficiency correction. Kass et al. (2017), PLOS ONE, PMID 28403154.
Can you use these instead of a supplement?
Do not substitute them for a clinician-recommended plan. The evidence reviewed here does not establish equivalent systemic delivery.
Calibrated verdict: Inconclusive for dependable systemic supplementation
The preliminary signal in Kass et al. (2017), PLOS ONE, PMID 28403154, is not enough to confirm reliable replacement of supplementation. Gröber et al. (2017), Nutrients, PMID 28788060, highlights the weak supporting literature. Choose topical bodycare for a clearly understood cosmetic role, not a promised bloodstream dose or an unverified threefold advantage.
