What Is the Acid Mantle?

Your skin's surface is coated in a thin, slightly acidic film called the acid mantle — a mixture of sebum, sweat, and the byproducts of your skin's resident microbiome. This film is your first line of defense. It inhibits the growth of pathogenic bacteria, supports the enzymes responsible for barrier lipid synthesis, and maintains the structural integrity of your stratum corneum.

What Disrupts Skin pH?

  • Alkaline cleansers — Traditional bar soaps typically have a pH of 9–10. A single wash can raise skin pH by 1–2 units, and it can take 1–2 hours to return to baseline. Korting et al. (1992), Acta Dermato-Venereologica, PMID 1361980.
  • Over-exfoliation — Aggressive AHA/BHA use without adequate recovery time can chronically lower pH below 4.0, paradoxically damaging the barrier through over-acidification.
  • Hard water — Calcium and magnesium ions in hard water raise surface pH and have been associated with increased eczema severity. Danby et al. (2018), Journal of Investigative Dermatology, PMID 29428583.
  • Age — Skin pH rises with age, contributing to barrier dysfunction and increased infection susceptibility. Darlenski et al. (2014), Skin Pharmacology and Physiology, PMID 24481290.
  • Antibacterial products — Triclosan and similar agents disrupt the microbiome, which in turn affects the organic acids that help maintain acidic pH.

Your skin hosts approximately 1,000 species of bacteria, fungi, and viruses. The acidic environment of healthy skin selectively favors beneficial commensals like Staphylococcus epidermidis while suppressing pathogenic species like Staphylococcus aureus.

Nakatsuji et al. (2017), Science Translational Medicine, PMID 28747333, showed that S. epidermidis produces antimicrobial peptides that selectively kill S. aureus — but only in an acidic environment. Raise the pH, and this natural defense collapses.

pH and Ingredient Efficacy
