The Claim
Rice water — the starchy water left over after rinsing or soaking rice — has been used for centuries in Asian hair care traditions, particularly in Japan and China. The viral claim: rinsing your hair with rice water makes it grow faster, longer, and stronger. TikTok and YouTube are full of dramatic before-and-afters. But what does the science actually say?
What's in Rice Water?
Rice water contains inositol (a carbohydrate), amino acids, vitamins B and E, minerals, and antioxidants. Inositol is the most studied component for hair — it can penetrate damaged hair and repair it from within, reducing surface friction and improving elasticity.
The Evidence
Evidence tier: TIER 3 — the evidence for rice water and hair growth is largely anecdotal and mechanistic. The most cited reference is a 2010 study by Inamasu et al. in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science that found inositol reduced hair surface friction and improved combability in damaged hair — but this is not the same as stimulating hair growth. No peer-reviewed RCT has demonstrated that rice water increases hair growth rate in humans.
Honest limitation: Rice water may improve hair appearance, manageability, and reduce breakage — which can make hair appear to grow faster by reducing the rate of loss. But it does not appear to stimulate follicle activity or increase the anagen (growth) phase. For actual hair growth stimulation, the evidence points to other ingredients.
Verdict: INCONCLUSIVE
Rice water is unlikely to harm your hair and may improve its condition and manageability. But the dramatic growth claims are not supported by clinical evidence. If hair growth is your goal, focus on evidence-backed ingredients first.
Evidence-Backed Hair Growth Ingredients
For actual follicle stimulation, these have stronger evidence:
- Minoxidil — TIER 1: FDA-approved, most evidence-backed topical hair growth ingredient
- Rosemary oil — TIER 2: Panahi et al. (2015) found rosemary oil comparable to 2% minoxidil over 6 months (PMID 25842469). The Hair Growth Oil with Tea Tree, Fenugreek & Rosemary delivers rosemary alongside complementary botanicals.
- Caffeine — TIER 2: topical caffeine counteracts DHT-induced follicle suppression
- GHK-Cu (copper peptides) — TIER 2: enlarges follicles and extends anagen phase
Kaminomoto: The Evidence-Backed Japanese Alternative
If you're drawn to Japanese hair care traditions, Kaminomoto has actual clinical backing. The Kaminomoto Super Strength Hair Serum Gold has been used in Japan for decades with documented efficacy. For women specifically, the Ladies Kaminomoto EX, Ladies Kaminomoto Hair Accelerator Floral, and Ladies Kaminomoto Hair Accelerator Lemon are formulated for female hair loss patterns.
The Onic Brands Hair Growth Serum and Boost Crown Whip Scalp Tonic round out a complete scalp health protocol.
