Why Astaxanthin Is Called the King of Carotenoids
The carotenoid family includes well-known antioxidants like beta-carotene, lycopene, and lutein. Astaxanthin’s unique molecular structure allows it to span the entire cell membrane, protecting both the inner and outer lipid layers simultaneously — a capability most antioxidants lack. It also crosses the blood-brain barrier and the blood-retinal barrier, reaching tissues that most antioxidants cannot access. The comparative potency figures (e.g., “6,000x more powerful than vitamin C”) are based on in vitro singlet oxygen quenching assays — they do not mean astaxanthin is 6,000x more effective in the body. Astaxanthin is a fat-soluble antioxidant and absorbs best with a meal containing healthy fats. It does not replace SPF.
