What Happens to Your Skin During Exercise
Sweat Composition & Barrier Impact
Sweat is produced by eccrine glands and is primarily water, sodium, lactate, urea, and trace ammonia. At physiological pH (around 4.5–5.5), sweat is mildly acidic and compatible with skin's acid mantle. However, prolonged sweat exposure on skin raises surface pH as the ammonia content accumulates, weakening the acid mantle and disrupting barrier enzyme function. Fluhr et al. (2001), Dermatology, PMID 11549788, confirmed that elevated skin surface pH is a primary driver of barrier dysfunction and increased susceptibility to irritants and pathogens.
Friction & Mechanical Stress
Sports bras, gym equipment surfaces, towels, and clothing create repetitive friction that mechanically disrupts the stratum corneum — particularly in areas of high contact: chest, back, shoulders, thighs. This is the primary driver of exercise-induced folliculitis and miliaria (heat rash).
Gym Equipment Bacterial Load
A 2019 FitRated study found free weights harbor up to 362 times more bacteria than a toilet seat, with significant gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial loads including Staphylococcus aureus. Combined with compromised barrier from sweat and friction, this creates an entry pathway for follicular infection.

Tarnopolsky et al. (2014), Journal of Investigative Dermatology, PMID 24521543, demonstrated that endurance exercise reverses dermal aging markers at the histological level — exercisers over 40 had significantly thinner, more youthful stratum corneum composition compared to sedentary controls. The anti-aging benefit of exercise is Tier 1 confirmed. The protocol is about capturing that benefit without the barrier damage.
The Post-Workout Skin Protocol
• Blot — do not rub — excess sweat with a clean microfiber cloth
• Spray our HOCl Clarifying Toner over face and any friction-prone areas — antimicrobial action without disrupting recovering barrier
Shower (within 30–60 min):
• Lukewarm water — not hot; heat extends vasodilation and increases TEWL
• Gentle pH-balanced cleanser on face; body wash on torso/back where folliculitis is common
• Do NOT use physical scrubs immediately post-workout — barrier is already mechanically stressed
Post-Shower (within 5 min, on damp skin):
• Humectant serum first (HA or niacinamide)

Body Acne & Post-Workout Folliculitis Prevention
Back acne (bacne) and chest acne in active people is almost always folliculitis — bacterial or fungal infection of hair follicles driven by the sweat-friction-occlusion triad. The HOCl spray step immediately post-workout is your highest-leverage prevention tool. Change out of workout clothes within 30 minutes. Shower within the hour. These two behavioral changes alone reduce exercise-related breakouts significantly for most people.
