When it's compromised, water evaporates faster than your skin can retain it. The fix isn't more water — it's rebuilding the barrier so water stays where it belongs.
The Science of Skin Hydration: The Three-Layer Model
Effective moisturization requires three categories of ingredients working together:
- Humectants — draw water into the skin from the environment or deeper layers (hyaluronic acid, glycerin, urea)
- Emollients — fill gaps between skin cells, improving texture and flexibility (squalane, fatty acids, ceramides)
- Occlusives — form a physical barrier on the skin surface to prevent transepidermal water loss (tallow, petrolatum, beeswax)
Most moisturizers contain all three. The protocol below layers them in sequence for maximum effect.

🟢 TIER 1 — Multiple RCTs Confirm
Hyaluronic Acid (HA)
HA holds up to 1,000x its weight in water and is the primary humectant in the skin's extracellular matrix. Draelos et al. (2021), Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, PMID 33660390, confirmed topical HA significantly improves skin hydration and elasticity. Critical caveat: apply to damp skin and seal immediately with an emollient or occlusive — HA applied to dry skin in low-humidity environments can pull water out of the dermis. Ceramides
Ceramides are the primary lipid component of the stratum corneum — they hold skin cells together and prevent water loss. Dry skin is consistently associated with ceramide deficiency. Meckfessel & Brandt (2014), Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, PMID 24767576, confirmed ceramide-containing moisturizers significantly improve barrier function and reduce TEWL.
Tallow (Grass-Fed)
Tallow's fatty acid profile (oleic, palmitic, stearic, linoleic) closely mirrors human sebum, making it one of the most biocompatible occlusives available. Glycerin
The most studied humectant in dermatology. Fluhr et al. (2008), British Journal of Dermatology, PMID 18510666, confirmed glycerin improves skin hydration, barrier function, and skin mechanical properties. Present in most well-formulated moisturizers.

Squalane
Plant-derived emollient that mimics the skin's natural squalene. Lightweight, non-comedogenic, and suitable for all skin types including dry. Improves skin softness and reduces TEWL. See Squalane article.
Urea (5–10%)
Dual-action humectant and keratolytic — at 5–10%, urea hydrates and softens rough, flaky skin. Particularly effective for very dry or keratotic skin on the body.
What Dry Skin Does NOT Need
Honest limitations: hot water strips the skin's natural oils — shower in lukewarm water and moisturize within 3 minutes of patting dry. Alcohol-based toners worsen dryness. Fragrance is a common irritant that worsens barrier dysfunction. Over-exfoliating removes the lipid layer that holds moisture in — limit to once weekly maximum for dry skin.
The Dry Skin Protocol: Step-by-Step
🌅 Morning
- Cream or milk cleanser — avoid foaming cleansers; they strip the lipid barrier

Dry Skin in Different Climates
